The Visual Laboratory is the space within Manet Secret where that process becomes accessible. It brings together a set of digital image analysis tools designed to support the examination of works under study, without requiring specialist software or technical training. Anyone visiting the project can engage directly with the visual material.

The tools allow users to isolate details, compare surface characteristics across different works, adjust contrast and tone to reveal underlying compositional decisions, and place images side by side to observe stylistic correspondences or divergences. What might take hours of manual comparison in a traditional research setting becomes immediate and navigable.

The intention is not to replace expert judgement. Technical analysis, material examination, and scholarly interpretation remain at the core of any attribution process. What the Visual Laboratory offers is a more open point of entry — a way for researchers, students, and interested observers alike to engage with the visual questions that provenance documents and archival records alone cannot answer.
